A Piece of History
Feed Cafe is locally owned and operated by Ally Pitts and Brian Schmidt. We view our employees and guests as Feed Family and we strive to be an integral part of the Gallatin Valley by supporting local farmers, producers, and other local businesses and non-profits. By supporting Feed Cafe you are supporting our unique community.
Henry Kirk and his four sons moved to Montana and establish their farm just west of Bozeman. Henry and his sons picked the Gallatin Valley as the place to start a farm because of the Valley’s rich and fertile soil.
In the summer of 1898 Harris Kirk and his father (and with the help of generous neighbors) built the Red Barn.
The Kirks’ eighty acres remained a working farm until 1958, the year Harris Kirk died at the age of 94. The following year West Main Street was extended and pieces of the farm were sold off.
In 1960, Marguerite Kirk and her sister, Eleanor, founded the Country Bookshelf and Paperback Barn. The bookstore was housed in the building that is now “the Roost” formerly the Kirk Farm’s chicken house. The Red Barn became home to thousands of books.
The Kirk sisters retired and the Red Barn had a long series of diverse commercial tenants including a saddle-maker’s store and workshop, a wine, cheese and sandwich store, an antique furniture store, and an internet café.
The 111-year old Red Barn was renovated top to bottom by current owners Christopher and Nicholas Harris (great-great grandsons of Henry Kirk) in their effort to secure the local landmark’s place in Bozeman.
Serena Rundberg and her team open Feed Cafe to meet the ever growing dining needs of the Bozeman community and make a commitment to serving fresh, local food out of the newly remodeled and restored Red Barn.
